Importance of Learning 99 Names of Allah SWT – Asma ul Husna

Being Muslim we believe that Allah SWT is the creator of the whole universe. Everything in the entire universe is happening with His will. Whether it is in our favor or not, it is approved by Him with His rationale and wisdom. And it is the part of our ‘eman’ or faith to trust and believe in Him. The general name of our Holy Lord is “Allah” which means “One & Only God”. According to His Qualities, the other 99 names of Allah represent His attributes.

In this article, we are going to explore these 99 names of Allah along with their meanings and implications.

Asma ul Husna or the holy names of Allah SWT present the nature of our Lord. Muslims need to familiarize themselves with the glorious names of Allah Almighty. When we recall the beautiful names of Allah, a feeling of faith, love, fear, and kindness develop in our hearts about Allah SWT.

Being able to comprehend the meanings of 99 names and attributes of Allah SWT, can be a source of our submission to that Ultimate Power. By remembering or memorizing the magnificent names of Allah, we make a space in our personality to build those qualities in our character and behavior.

Holy Prophet Muhammad SAWW said,

“Allah has 99 names, whoever memorizes and embraces these qualities, will enter heaven”

(Bukhari)

We feel befallful when Allah SWT tests us in some ways of life, but remembering the Holy names of Allah Almighty gives us relief and comfort according to the situation.

Allah SWT mentions in the Quran,

وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا ۖ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِىٓ أَسْمَـٰٓئِهِۦ ۚ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ١٨٠

Translation,

“Allah has the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them, and keep away from those who abuse His names. They will be punished for what they used to do”

(Al-Quran 7: 180)

According to the mentioned Ayah, Allah SWT has instructed us to call Him by His beautiful name. And forbids us to not call Him with the names He doesn’t own. Otherwise, we will have to face the anger of Allah Almighty.

  2. الرَّحِيْمُ – Always Merciful
  3. الْمَلِکُ – The King
  4. القُدُّوْسُ – Free from all defects and defects
  5. ٱلْسَّلَامُ – peace-giver
  6. الْمُؤْمِنُ – The Forgiver
  7. الْمُهَيْمِنُ – Guardian and protector
  8. الْعَزِيْزُ – honor, greatness and dominance
